So this week I have been sick with the flu and have been at home 3 hours away from campus. Needless to say I have fallen behind on work this week :/ so I haven't started Breakfast On Pluto yet, but I plan on going to the library once I feel better and will have a blog ready for next week.
Anyways, for my creative project I was thinking of doing a video-montage type thing maybe of Carmilla or Portrait or Dorian Gray. I think it would be interesting to re-create the sea scene in Portrait of the Artist, or the scene in Carmilla when they meet for the first (2nd) time. I still have to think about what exactly I'm going to do, but I know it will be some sort of video or picture. I love to express myself creatively and take advantage of every opportunity I have to do it. I know this blog is vague (not to mention, late!) and I apologize but this week has been no bueno for me. If anyone has any ideas they would like to pitch to me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Lucky,
ReplyDeleteSo here's a suggestion... do all of them. If you're doing a montage you can probably easily transition between all three stories. I think that might be interesting to see how that might work out for you. I think that might work out the best for your idea. Maybe set it to music and link all three stories that way and not just through the imagery. I'll be real interested to see what you come up with because that is just a neat idea. If its something that you really enjoy I'd go for it. However you may even want to take parts of other stories and use those as points, it would be a really cool way to take the entirety of the class and condense it down to a few moments of memorable glory. I do hope that you're feeling better though and that things start going more your way.

This sounds like a really cool idea. I'm not exactly sure what a video montage means. Will you have actors and be using a video camera or will you just writing the script for one? I really like the way it sounds. There is definitely a lot of room for creativity and I'm interested to see how the different scenes from the novels are portrayed in someone elses imagination. I'm interested to see how you scaffold the dialogue between characters. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI didn't get a chance to start Breakfast on Pluto either! It shocked me that it was the only book I didn't buy no and I mean no bookstores had it and I was in bad standings with my local librarians because when i got my car stolen they threw out three library books and I owed a lot of money! But i got that cleared up and I started the book a few days ago and man is it funny! My dad thought it would be helpful to get me the movie and I might watch that once I'm done.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of a montage and the idea of connecting ideas of your choices. I agree with Seraph that it would be interesting to connect the stories to one another perhaps not just connecting the themes of the novels themselves but the time in which they were written external influences if you will.
Good luck and feel better!
Ann, I watched the movie... crazy bizarre, and I personally disliked it after reading the book because soooo much was changed character wise. After you watch it, tell me what you think!
ReplyDeleteSo, to jump on the bandwagon I think you should also do your montage on all the novels you suggested. Maybe not based on theme, but a characteristic, or commonality. The novels we're reading in this class has completely paralleled themes of culture and identity that I'm learning in an Africology course and last night we examined how despite our differences there are significant markers that cause us to have more in common than you think- family, religion, education and maybe you could use that to relate the characters?
Lucky,
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Tullamore Drea above: I HATE the film! But it IS interesting to examine why Neil Jordan chose to make certain changes, especially in a post Belfast agreement world. Perhaps this is something you could explore for this week's blog.
As for your project--I love it! In a previous class, I had two students design a film montage for Jane Eyre using music and images, and it was amazing. If you do choose to link these novels together, make sure you are exploring a very specific theme. I also really like the idea of doing a visual montage of the bird-girl scene in _Portrait_. I think that could be a wonderful end-of-semester project. Great ideas!
